Endy Chavez's second-inning RBI groundout got Baltimore on the board, but in the bottom half of the frame, Derek Jeter singled in new Yankee Casey McGehee and Swisher knocked in Jayson Nix with a single of his own. Nix's run-scoring, ground-rule double to left-center in the third made it 5-1 and knocked Britton out of the game.
Britton would be charged two additional runs when Jeter drove in McGehee and Nix with a single to center off reliever Kevin Gregg.
Robinson Cano capped the seven-run, third-inning rally with his ninth career grand slam (the Yankees' eighth this season).
Yankees starter Phil Hughes has allowed seven hits but only one run (Chavez's RBI groundout) over four innings.
Through four innings, New York, which entered Wednesday having lost four straight, leads Baltimore 11-1.
