Should Broncos really bring back Peyton Manning?

The Denver Broncos went on a dominant run in the Peyton Manning era: Four AFC Division titles. 50 regular season victories. Multiple records, including 606 points scored in the 2013 season–the most all time. Oh, and two AFC Championships and a Super Bowl 50 victory.

But Manning barely made it through 2015, though he did help Denver win the Super Bowl. He retired with peace at age 39, which seemed like the right call. But given how the Broncos quarterbacks have struggled in preseason, should they give The Sheriff a call?

James Merilatt from Mile High Sports seems to think so. He pointed out how John Elway recruited lineman Gary Zimmerman out of retirement–helping Denver win their first-ever Super Bowl.

“And once again, No. 7 needs to put forth a great sales pitch, convincing a player to come out of retirement and help save the day. That’s right, Elway needs to coax Peyton Manning back to Denver for one more season.”

Merilatt cited how Manning’s 2015 struggles came down to three things: His foot injury, the Broncos porous offensive line (four new starters in 2016,) and unfamiliarity with Gary Kubiak’s offense, which no Broncos quarterback has been able to succeed in yet.

He also made strong points about Manning having good efforts in the Week 2 comeback in Kansas City last year, or his strong second half in Indianapolis. Merilatt believes Elway could convince Manning to come back with the plan of running his own offense and retiring on better terms–as a Super Bowl MVP like Elway did.

Even though I’m Peyton Manning’s biggest fan and am finding it hard to be excited for this season without him playing, the idea of him coming back is next-to-none. Manning knows his play has slowed down. He’s 40 and has too many injuries that would set him back.

Furthermore, he retired as a champion and wants to be remembered that way. We all know what happened to Brett Favre’s legacy as he came in-and-out of retirement with his career best being remembered now for his poor play in his last season.

Maybe Elway gets desperate and asks Manning to make it one last run, but it’s another story if the latter is actually enticed.
