Broncos give Manning familiar target in Tamme

Updated March 24, 2012 @ 12:40 p.m. ET

Days after signing Peyton Manning, the Broncos have added a familiar target for the quarterback.

On Friday, the team reached an agreement with TE Jacob Tamme. According to reports, the deal is for three years and worth $9 million.

Tamme spent his first four seasons with the Colts, though he was a primary receiver for Manning in only one of them. In that year, 2010, Tamme started eight games and hauled in 67 receptions for 631 yards.

Earlier on Friday, the Broncos agreed to terms with ex-Texans TE Joel Dreessen.

The way we see it

Manning is fond of using the tight ends, as he used several over the years with the Colts, from Marcus Pollard to Dallas Clark to Tamme. That should continue with the Broncos, who now have given the QB a pair of targets to throw to.

Denver also has two second-year tight ends on the roster in Julius Thomas and Virgil Green. The team was high on Thomas after drafting him a year ago, as he has rare athleticism and speed. However, he wasn’t much of a factor as a rookie (one catch in five games) and he might struggle to see the field with more depth in front of him.

Fantasy spin

Many don’t realize the fantasy potential Jacob Tamme brings to the Broncos. Overshadowed by Dallas Clark in Indianapolis, Tamme has had his moments. In 2010 against the Eagles in Week Eight he ended with 11-108-1 on 17 targets, and in 16 games with eight starts posted 67-631-4. He has a four-year career stat line of 92-855-5 in 60 games with 14 starts.

Only 27 years old, he does have potential and will come in hoping to carry the Manning TE legacy that started with Marcus Pollard and then Clark. However, don’t assume he has Clark’s talent and view him as a No. 2 fantasy tight end with upside. He was signed partly because he knows the offense, can help implement and teach it, as well as produce in it. Remember, the team has a wild card in Julius Thomas, although he’s a raw talent who may take time to develop.
