Broncos in good shape if CB Porter healthy for playoffs

Broncos CB Tracy Porter got off to a hot start with his new team, returning an interception 43 yards for a touchdown and being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week in Week One.

Porter has not played since Week Five, though, after becoming ill prior to the team’s Week Six game. He suffered an epileptic seizure in August and then suffered similar symptoms in October, but he returned to action in Week 16. There has not been a drop-off, as Porter’s absence has opened the door for CBs Chris Harris and Tony Carter to thrive. They lead the team with 11 passes defensed apiece, and Harris, who starts opposite Champ Bailey, has returned two interceptions for scores.

The play by Harris and Carter has allowed the Broncos to be extra patient with Porter, who can take too many risks at times, but Denver would still prefer him back for the playoffs. Porter could return for Week 16, and if he can be healthy for January, it would be very beneficial for the Broncos to trot out four solid cornerbacks, especially considering their potential playoff opponent. As it stands, Denver is in line to play the Patriots in the divisional round, a team that has averaged 39 points in their last three games vs. the Broncos in the last two seasons.
