WNBA player and NCAA champion Brittney Griner hasn't always been at the top of her game. Growing up, she had to deal with more than her fair share of negativity concerning her height and sexuality, but now she’s fighting back in a big way.

One out of every six students in the U.S. suffers from bullying on a regular basis. Griner plans to provide youth with a new anti-bullying app, BG: BU (Be You), giving victims of bullying and their allies opportunities to reach out for help and support. Encouraging strength, empowerment and creativity, BG: BU will be a means for young people to talk about their issues, ask questions and receive advice in a safe and confidential space. Users can upload their art, photos and videos and express their feelings and ideas to an accepting and non-judgmental mobile community. Griner hopes the app will inspire and uplift those who struggle with being bullied, and enable them to seek further resources in their local environment and across the world.

Griner asks for your support via IndieGoGo, a crowd-funding platform with a goal to raise $100,000.

“Growing up, I went through years of bullying with people teasing me and picking on me for being different,” says the Phoenix Mercury center on her IndieGoGo page. “I know how hard it can be to constantly be put down, and I know that it sometimes feels like it’s never going to get better. BG: BU provides something I wish I had when I was younger—an outlet to talk about what’s going on.”

In conjunction with launching BG: BU, Griner recently released a memoir, In My Skin, discussing her journey to find strength through years of bullying. Having heard countless vicious insults, she reflects on the highs and the lows and calls for readers to endure like she did in the search for courage to honor their authentic selves.
