Britt, Morgan provide Titans rare glimmers of hope

As QB Jake Locker continues to raise more questions than provide answers regarding the future of the QB position in Nashville, the Titans have found a rare silver lining in a lost season from the two first-round picks that preceded Locker, DE Derrick Morgan and WR Kenny Britt, both of whom put forth easily their best performances of the season in the Week 14 loss to the Colts.

With only eight career starts under the belt of Locker, who strangely seems to have regressed since rejoining the starting lineup in Week 11, following a shoulder injury that cost him almost six full games, it is far too soon to write him off. Sure, it is concerning that he made less mistakes right out of the gate than he is making late in the season, but there have been enough great flashes to warrant patience.

In the case of Morgan and Britt, patience has worn thinner, making their excellent showings in Indianapolis all the more important.

Britt maintains his knee is still bothering him, yet his eight-catch, 143-yard outburst looked an awful lot like the receiver who was dominant prior to a season-ending knee injury early in 2011. Our sources thought a more active approach to get Britt the football also contributed to his success, but whatever the reason, the way he builds on his first 100-yard receiving day since Week Two in 2011 will be a key situation to monitor down the home stretch.

Off the field, word is Britt still has some growing up to do. He has blown off the media on more than one occasion after games, but our source suggests there isn’t anything malicious about his actions — he was chuckling when telling media members he wouldn’t be talking on the way out of the locker room last week. Instead, we hear he is an aloof but likable guy who simply still doesn’t know better.

While injuries and poor decision making have been the obvious reasons for Britt’s up-and-down young career, the inconsistent play of Morgan is harder to pinpoint, we hear. His disruptive outing against the Colts (three tackles, one sack, four QB hits), though, was his most complete game as a Titan. Unfortunately, it also magnified free-agent acquisition Kamerion Wimbley's invisibility. The source pointed out that he (and the Titans) are still waiting to see both edge rushers click at the same time.
