WEMBLEY, England (AP) -- With an electric Wembley atmosphere all around, Britain held on to beat Brazil 1-0 and reach the quarterfinals of the women's Olympic soccer tournament.
Stephanie Houghton scored the lone goal after only 90 seconds in front of 70,584 spectators, the third-largest crowd to ever watch a women's game.
The carnival atmosphere continued to the end in an up-tempo match in which Brazil striker Marta hit the post before Smith had a 55th-minute penalty saved by Brazil goalkeeper Andreia.
Britain joins the United States with a perfect record of three victories. Brazil, which has also qualified for the quarterfinals, will next face World Cup champion Japan on Friday.
