Brewers will exercise their part of $14M option on Aramis Ramirez

The Brewers intend to pick up their part of the $14 million mutual option on Aramis Ramirez's contract, league sources said.

Milwaukee has the option of buying out the veteran third baseman Ramirez for $4 million but is pleased with his performance and prefers him back with the team on a $14 million, one-year commitment.

However, since Ramirez's option is a mutual option, the player could still decline the option and try to become a free agent instead, as Adam McCalvy pointed out. (The original story negelcted to mention Ramirez's option.)

Ramirez, the Brewers' cleanup hitter, is batting .295 with 16 home runs, 65 RBI and a .788 OPS. He has hit exactly .295 for his three years in Milwaukee.

Ramirez's return to the Brewers would weaken the third-base market. Giants star Pablo Sandoval is the other top free-agent third baseman, and Chase Headley is also a free agent.
