Brewers OF Braun in lineup despite injury

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun was in Sunday's lineup batting third against the Boston Red Sox, despite being bothered by a right thumb injury.

Braun, who missed Friday's game because of the injury, is off to a 1-for-16 start to the season. Braun acknowledged that he sustained the injury last year but chose not to have surgery on it while serving a 65-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

"The challenging thing is when I can't take a normal swing," Braun said Saturday. "I took a lot of good swings (in the season-opening series against the Atlanta Braves) and lined out quite a few times, had some good at-bats. (Friday) that wasn't the case."

Braun, a five-time All-Star and former National League MVP, said he has not considered having surgery during the season.

"It's frustrating," he said. "I've dealt with it a long time. Like I said, I'm optimistic we'll figure something out to make it better. But when it gets to a point I can't come close to taking a normal swing, it's counterproductive to the team and to me to continue to play."
