Brewers 4, Mets 2
NEW YORK -- The Milwaukee Brewers scored four runs in the second inning and beat the New York Mets 4-2 in the opener of a season-ending, four-game series Thursday night at Citi Field.
The Brewers earned their fourth win in five games, while the Mets' modest two-game winning streak ended.
The Mets went 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base in their second loss in seven games.
Alfredo Figaro (3-3) picked up the win in two scoreless innings of relief. Jim Henderson earned his 27th save, but not before giving up a solo home run to Josh Satin and a double to Justin Turner in the ninth inning.
Mets starter Dillon Gee (12-11) allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked two. Gee finishes the season with 199 innings pitched, one year after missing the entire second half recovering from surgery on his pitching shoulder.
Milwaukee's Khris Davis led off the fourth inning with a walk and reached second on a single to center by Caleb Gindl. After Yuniesky Betancourt popped out, Juan Francisco's roller eluded Daniel Murphy behind second base, and Davis scored. It was Francisco's first RBI since Aug. 21.
Jeff Bianchi followed with a bloop RBI single to center, and Scooter Gennett laced a two-run single to left. Gennett was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The Mets answered in the third when Eric Young, who reached on a walk, stole second and reached third on a throwing error by catcher Jonathan Lucroy, scored on a groundout to short by Murphy.
David Wright was hit in the helmet by a Johnny Hellweg fastball and left the game as a precaution. Lucas Duda then was hit on the leg and Mike Baxter walked to load the bases for Matt den Dekker, who struck out swinging at a high fastball to end the inning.
Hellweg labored through four innings, allowing one run, two hits, four walks and one wild pitch to go with three strikeouts.
Young, who reached safely in his first two at-bats and stole two bases, nearly tied the game in the sixth, but Davis made a catch at the left field wall to end the inning.
Murphy led off the seventh by doubling off the base of the left field wall, and he reached third on a Justin Turner groundout. After Duda walked, Baxter grounded into a rally-killing 4-6-3 double play.
NOTES: Brewers CF Carlos Gomez served a one-game suspension from Major League Baseball for his role in a benches-clearing fracas against the Braves on Wednesday night in Atlanta. He chose not to appeal. "I was expecting it after what happened last night," he said. "It's not good for baseball, all that's going on. You have to take it like a man and be responsible for the stuff that I did. Just take the game today and come back tomorrow and continue to finish hard and strong." ... Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez tweaked his left knee during the altercation and did not play Thursday night. ... Mets RHP Matt Harvey (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. ... Baxter started his third consecutive game. "I just thought he's been swinging pretty good," manager Terry Collins said. "It was about three games ago he put some good swings on the bat -- he hit the ball hard. He doesn't have a lot to show for it, but he swung the bat very well."
