Brendan Malone joins son's Kings staff

The Sacramento Kings will have two Malones on the bench next season with the hiring on Wednesday of Brendan Malone as an assistant coach.

He will join a staff led by his son, Mike, who was named as the Kings' head coach earlier this month. The addition of Brendan Malone was announced Tuesday by the team, which did not disclose contract terms.

The Malones are the second father and son to work as head coaches in the NBA, joining Bill and Eric Musselman. Bill Musselman was a former coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Eric Musselman held the same position with the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings.

"I'm excited to add a coach with the breadth of basketball knowledge my father provides," Mike Malone said. "Aside from the benefits of having a trusted family member by my side, he's a talented coach who brings more than 25 years of invaluable NBA experience to Sacramento."

The Malones have worked together beofre as assistants for the New York Knicks in 2003-04.

Brendan Malone has spent 27 years in the NBA. He was the first head coach of the expansion Toronto Raptors and also the Cleveland Cavaliers' interim coach for the final 18 games of the 2004-05 season More recently, he had worked as an assistant with the the Orlando Magic. His career record as a head coach is 29-71.

Mike Malone was the lead assistant with the Golden State Warriors before taking the Kings' job. He replaced Keith Smart, who was let go after less than two years on the job.
