Brazil - Argentina game abandoned after floodlight failure

Brazil’s clash with Argentina was suspended Wednesday night following floodlight failure at Estadio Centenario in Resistencia, Argentina.

The second leg of their Superclasico de las Americas -- a pair of friendlies featuring domestic-based playerrs -- was postponed after a blackout that was believed to have been caused by the Selecao team bus hitting an electricity trailer on its way into the stadium.

Firefighters were called to the scene after smoke began emanating from the trailer, and electricians declared that the problem would require a lengthy amount of time to correct, leaving Chilean referee Enrique Osses with no choice but to abandon the game after already delaying it 45 minutes.

Guillermo Toffoni, head of World Eleven said the incident was a unique one, and admitted his disappointment that contingency plans had not been set in place.

“I have [been involved in] over 200 international matches, and this has never happened,” he told reporters. "Something was alien to us. Generators had to be prepared, but this was unexpected. The truth gives us shame.”

Brazil was leading Argentina 2-1 from the first leg, with Neymar's penalty kick in stoppage time providing the difference after Argentina's Juan Martinez and Brazil's Paulinho had scored for either side.
