Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy, who leads the Major Leagues in earned run average at 2.00, has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will visit Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday to determine whether he needs Tommy John surgery.
The tear was revealed in an MRI performed on Monday.
If Tommy John surgery is needed, Beachy probably will require 12 months to recover. However, it's possible Andrews will suggest Beachy wait a few weeks before deciding whether surgery is necessary.
Beachy's future has been uncertain since he was forced to leave Saturday night's game against the Orioles with elbow discomfort.
Beachy, 25, has a 5-5 record in 13 starts to go along with his 2.00 ERA.
