Braves agree to extension with Teheran

The SportsXchange

Atlanta Braves right-hander Julio Teheran agreed to a six-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.

Financial terms were not released but CBS Sports reported that the deal is worth $32.4 million guaranteed and includes an option for a seventh year at $12 million with a $1 million buyout.

Teheran, 23, was 14-8 with a 3.20 ERA in 185 2/3 innings last year. He finished fifth in the balloting for the National League Rookie of the Year.

Teheran would not have been eligible for free agency until after the 2018 season, so the extension buys out his five remaining years of team control and one eligible free agency year with the option covering an additional year.

Similar contract signed by Toronto Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero (five years, $30.1 million) and San Francisco Giants starter Madison Bumgarner (five years, $35 million) may have been used as models for Teheran's deal. Like Teheran, Romero and Bumgarner secured their contracts when they were five years away from free-agent eligibility.
