AP - Sports

HOUSTON (AP) -- Rice coach Ben Braun has resigned after the Owls finished the season 7-23.

Braun says he ''thought it was in our program's best interest'' that he stepped down. He was 63-128 in six seasons with the Owls.

Athletic director Joe Karlgaard says the school will start the search for his replacement immediately.

Braun's best season with the Owls came when they went 19-16 in 2012. It was the most wins for Rice since the 2004-05 season.

The 60-year-old Braun coached at California before joining the Owls and has a 615-517 record in his 36-year coaching career.
