Brandon Rios

Brandon Rios stopped Mike Alvarado in the seventh round with referee Pat Russell ending the fight on Oct. 13 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Alvarado seemed to protest the referee's decision, but Rios was clearly the winner at the end of the night. Their fight overshadowed the main event between Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka.

Fight of the Year?

Fans and critics have already started to call the Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado night the fight of the year. From the first round, Rios and Alvarado engaged in a brutal war that left little doubt about their determination to win the junior welterweight fight. The action was close throughout the night with both men vying to dominate, and Rios landed 33 percent of his punches compared to Alvarado's 31 percent.

Referee Pat Russell's decision to stop the fight in the seventh round to award a TKO has been criticized, and Mike Alvarado objected by claiming he could have kept going, but would it have made a difference? Alvarado was clearly tired by the seventh round, and the fight was likely to simply end with a knockout at that point. Russell has explained his decision by stating that he felt Mike Alvarado was defenseless and added, "There is not a referee out there that wants to see a fighter get permanently injured and that's why I stopped it."

A Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado Rematch?

Although a rematch between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado may be welcomed by fans, it seems that Top Rank has other plans for the winner. Bob Arum has already indicated that Rios may fight Manny Pacquiao in the future. Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s name was also mentioned as a potential opponent, but this could simply be more hype. Despite losing the Oct. 13 fight, Mike Alvarado's record is still an admirable 33-1, and he seems interested in a rematch. Rios also wants another chance with Alvarado. However, Arum may delay it to move Brandon Rios up to 147 pounds and stage a fight at that level, but nothing is likely to happen until 2013.
