On Sept. 5, McCarthy was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of the Angels' Erick Aybar, and suffered a skull fracture as a result. A return for McCarthy this season seemed improbable (to say the least) after such a scary and serious injury, but now it sounds like he still has a chance of toeing the rubber in October.
