Update: Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that he thinks it's possible McCarthy (head) could pitch at some point in the playoffs, Joe Stiglich of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Recommendation: "It wouldn't surprise me if he was able to do that," Melvin said. On Sept. 5, McCarthy was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of the Angels' Erick Aybar, and suffered a skull fracture as a result. A return for McCarthy this season seemed improbable (to say the least) after such a scary and serious injury, but now it sounds like he still has a chance of toeing the rubber in October.
