A's Braden will have another surgery

The SportsXchange

A's left-handed starting pitcher Dallas Braden will need another surgery on his throwing shoulder, A's manager Bob Melvin told reporters Tuesdsay.

Braden, 29, underwent the first surgery on May 17, 2011, to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder. But he has not been recovering as quickly as expected and he flew to New York last week for a follow up visit with Dr. David Altchek, who performed the surgery.

It was determined he needed another exploratory surgery. A date for that operation has not been set.

Braden last pitched in a major league game on April 16, 2011. He had been on a throwing program and was throwing up to 40 pitches in bullpen sessions recently, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, so the news that another surgery was needed came as a bit of a surprise.
