Boston's Ortiz begins rehab assignment

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz collected two hits in three at-bats Thursday during his first rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Ortiz was seeing his first game action since experiencing difficulty with his surgically repaired Achilles during the spring.

"I was getting a little sore -- but a good sore," he said, according to the Providence Journal. "I ran a lot today, so you don't want to go too crazy right away."

Ortiz batted third during the Pawtucket Red Sox's home opener against the Rochester Red Wings. He struck out in his first at-bat, then singled in the third and fifth innings.

Previously this week, Ortiz competed in extended spring training games. Barring any setbacks, he could rejoin the Red Sox as early as next week.

"I'm just coming down here to get some at-bats and get that engine going," he said of playing for Pawtucket.

Ortiz, 37, played in 90 games for Boston last season, batting .318 with 23 home runs and 60 RBI in 324 at-bats. He missed all but one of the team's final 72 games with a right Achilles strain.
