Boston Celtics Reportedly in the Market for Omer Asik

Asik Sweepstakes

COMMENTARY | The Boston Celtics haven't had a physical, defensive-minded center since they traded Kendrick Perkins to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

It became clear the Kevin Garnett needed a true center next to him to be at the top of his game, and the team has yet to find a true replacement.

By now, we're all well aware that Omer Asik is unhappy with the Houston Rockets. After a very good first year, Asik was replaced by Dwight Howard. The Rockets tried to play them both at the same time, but with no success.

According to Marc Stein of ESPN Boston, the Boston Celtics appear to be a dark-horse candidate to make a deal for Asik. Stein suggests Jeff Green and Brandon Bass would be great fits in Houston as floor-spacing power forwards next to Dwight Howard.

Asik for Bass? Sign me up. Bass is a solid player and a true professional, but he's nothing special. If you have the chance to deal away Bass for a rim protector and rebounder of Asik's caliber, you have to do it.

If the Celtics have to give up Green, it must be a tough sell for Danny Ainge. Green has been the team's best perimeter player this season, and is a clear cornerstone of the Celtics. Asik is good, but he's really only relevant on one end of the floor.

In the event that Ainge gives up Jeff Green for Asik, we can start talking about tanking. Asik would without a doubt make the Celtics better on defense, but where would they find enough points to win games? As you look up and down the roster, it's tough to find a way to replace Green's offensive production.

Losing Jeff Green and a potential first-round pick, which Stein suggests, would hurt deeply right now. The Celtics' playoff chances would take a hit. Long-term, however, maybe it makes sense. Very good rim-protecting big men are harder to find than wing players, and Ainge has to be drooling at the prospect of replacing Green with Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker.
