Bonds wants to bring his expertise back to Giants

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds watched the Giants' 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday and, five years after his final game, said he'd like to return to the organization as an instructor.

Bonds was in good spirits as he addressed a few reporters before the game and joined the team's broadcast team during the game. He said he has taken up a new sport, cycling, and was in attendance for charitable reasons -- with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area.

For the first time, he spoke openly about his court case, saying, "I'm a convicted felon for obstruction of justice, and that's who I am. I live with it. ... I went through the system. That's what they gave me. I'm in appeal right now. I was never convicted of steroids."

Bonds also addressed his Hall of Fame chances and said, "It would be very sad if it didn't happen."

He added, "I don't worry about that stuff. I'll be at home having a good time with my life and my kids. Or hopefully here. Doing some stuff for kids. And hopefully doing stuff to help the organization. That'll take care of itself. I don't need to worry about that stuff."

Bonds said his weight is down to 212 to 215 pounds, and he appeared to be in good shape despite coming off back and hip surgeries.

He is hoping to repair a reputation that he admits to being "iffy."

"I'm an athlete. I gave my life and soul to that game. That's what's heartbreaking," he said. "I gave my whole life. I did it hard for 22 years. Hard. That's the hard part of it. You sit at home and go through it. It's tough."
