Boll, Carle, Seidenberg among those set to be bought out
Free Agent Frenzy kicks off Friday at noon ET and NHL teams are continuing to find ways to free up extra salary cap space in order to try and improve their rosters this summer.
In all, 14 buyouts were used this month, and some general managers decided to use the option before Thursday’s deadline.
Getting the “waived for intention to buy out” treatment are Matt Carle, Lauri Korpikoski, Jared Boll, Dennis Seidenberg, Matt Greene and Barret Jackman, per Bob McKenzie. If and when they clear waivers on Friday, their respective contracts will be buy out.
Here’s who hit the wire on Thursday:
Boll: The Columbus Blue Jackets will save $1.134 million on their cap this season for buying out the final year of the 30-year-old forward’s deal who, along Fedor Tyutin was one of team’s longest-tenured players. The Blue Jackets will have a $566,666 hit on their cap for the next two seasons. After buying out Tyutin and re-signing Seth Jones, Columbus had just over $42,000 in space on Wednesday. They’re now up to $4.467 million in room.
Carle: A diminished role saw the 31-year-old blue liner expendable, and with new deals needed for Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn, GM Steve Yzerman will take the cap space however he can get it. Doing this move will save the Tampa Bay Lightning $3.67 million over the next two seasons, but also place a $1.833 hit on their cap through 2019-20.
Greene: A shoulder injury limited the 33-year-old to only three games this past season. With GM Dean Lombardi needing extra space room, the move to buy out the defenseman will mean the Los Angeles Kings will carry a $833,333 hit in each of the next four seasons, freeing up $1.67 million over the next two.
Jackman: After only one season with the Nashville Predators following 12 in St. Louis with the Blues, the veteran defenseman will be a UFA beginning Friday. GM David Poile opens up $1.33 million in cap room while the team will see $666,666 on their cap for the next two seasons.
Korpikoski: The move saves the Edmonton Oilers $2 millon in 2016-17 and will see them carry cap hits of $500,000 in 2016-17 and $1 million in 2017-18.
Seidenberg: The 34-year-old defenseman missed 105 games over the last four seasons as injuries kept him off the ice. He had two years left on his deal so the Boston Bruins will be charged $1.166 million this coming season and for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, while they’ll also take a $2.166 million hit in 2017-18. The move saves the Bruins $4.66 million over the next two seasons and will help in re-signing RFA Torey Krug.
Teams that have two players go to arbitration this summer are eligible for another buyout period 48 hours after their second case is either awarded or settled.
