Blue Jays SS Reyes to begin rehab Monday

The SportsXchange

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes, who has been out since April 12 with a severely sprained ankle, is set to start a rehab assignment Monday. reported that Reyes is expected to play for Class A Dunedin. He played two innings in the field and had three at-bats in a simulated game Friday. He also participated in sliding drills afterward.

"It's a pretty good injury, so we have to ease him into it, too," manager John Gibbons said. "He can do all of those drills on the field, but it's still not like reacting in a game. It'll be a build-up thing, but the hitting and timing at the plate is important, too."

The Blue Jays do not want to rush Reyes back and risk further injury, but Gibbons said that Reyes should be ready after two weeks of rehab games. He could be ready in time for the Blue Jays' series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park that starts June 27 and may join the team the series before that against the host Tampa Bay Rays starting June 24.

Reyes batted .395 with a .465 OBP and five stolen bases in 38 at-bats through the first 10 games of the season before the injury.
