Blue Jays' Santos to have elbow surgery

The SportsXchange

The already hurting Toronto Blue Jays were hit with more injuries Tuesday, this time to reliever Sergio Santos, starter Brandon Morrow and outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Santos, 29, will have surgery to remove bone chips and spurs from his right elbow. He had been close to a rehab assignment, but was still experiencing discomfort. The surgery will likely keep him out until after the All-Star Break. Santos has made five appearances this season, but none since April 13.

Morrow will have his next start pushed back to Saturday against the New York Yankees. The righty threw a successful bullpen session on Sunday, but the team wanted to give him a few extra days of rest for his neck. Veteran Ramon Ortiz, 40, will make a spot start Wednesday against the San Diego Giants.

Cabrera is batting .261 with one homer this season, and the Jays want to rule out anything serious with his tight right hamstring. The 28-year-old is in the lineup Tuesday as the DH.
