Blue Jays to pull back on McGowan's rehab

The SportsXchange

Injuries took a major toll on the Toronto Blue Jays last season, particularly the starting rotation.

Two days into spring workouts and new manager John Gibbons is already talking about the same sore subject.

Right-hander Dustin McGowan, working his way back from his third shoulder surgery, is being watched closely after emerging from Tuesday's workout with a sore shoulder. Gibbons said McGowan played catch in the outfield Tuesday. He didn't throw off of a mound.

Even if the hurdle is short-lived, it puts McGowan's return in doubt and his long-shot bid at a spot in the rotation in peril.

The Blue Jays acquired three starters in the offseason -- National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey, right-hander Josh Johnson and left-hander Mark Buehrle, both in a trade with the Miami Marlins -- who are well ahead of McGowan. Brandon Morrow, the Blue Jays' top talent in the rotation, and Ricky Romero are expected to round out the rotation.

McGowan signed a two-year contract in March 2012 but didn't make an appearance last season until September. He was the 33rd overall pick in the 2000 amateur draft and the longest-tenured Toronto Blue Jays' player on their spring roster.
