NEWARK, N.J. -- Right winger Cam Atkinson scored the only goal in a shootout to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night at the Prudential Center.
Devils left winger Adam Henrique had the tying goal in the third period. Left winger Artem Anisimov scored for the Blue Jackets.
Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur made 29 saves and Blue Jackets goaltender Curtis McElhinney stopped 16 shots.
Brodeur was under siege throughout the first period and the Blue Jackets eventually broke through for the first goal.
Center Brandon Dubinsky had a glorious opportunity off a 2-on-1 chance, but Brodeur stretched his right leg to the post to deny the shot. The Devils could not regain control of the puck and Anisimov chipped his 11th goal of the season over a prone Brodeur at 7:34.
The Blue Jackets had numerous chances to extend the lead during the first two periods, but Brodeur was there time after time. He stopped Atkinson on a breakaway during the second period and made a series of tough stops while the Devils were short-handed.
The Devils, meanwhile, only mustered nine shots over the first 40 minutes.
Henrique broke the drought at 5:45 of the third period, tying the score at 1 with his seventh goal of the season. He drove to the net and knocked home a rebound of a shot by left winger Patrik Elias that eluded McElhinney.
NOTES: The Blue Jackets were without a slew of key players, including G Sergei Bobrovsky (groin), RW Marian Gaborik (collarbone), RW Nathan Horton (left shoulder) and LW Matt Calvert (shoulder). Horton has yet to play a game this season after signing a seven-year deal in the offseason. ... Devils LW Ryane Clowe made his return to the lineup after sitting out with a concussion since Oct. 13. Clowe played in just six games this season after signing a five-year, $24.25 million contract over the summer.
