Blazers Taking a Look at Adam Morrison in Training Camp

Yahoo Contributor Network

There was a lot of hype surrounding Adam Morrison when he entered the NBA Draft out of Gonzaga in 2006.

In Portland, fans were clamoring for the team to draft Morrison and keep the Bulldogs' star in the Pacific Northwest, but the Blazers went a different route, one that wound up working quite a bit better, really.

They drafted LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy and Joel Freeland that year, and Morrison, who went No. 3 overall to the Charlotte Bobcats, went on to become a pretty big draft bust, playing for the 'Cats and the Lakers before heading overseas for the past two seasons.

The 6-foot-8 Morrison, a pure scorer in college if there ever was one, stormed back onto the scene this summer with his standout performance on the Clippers' Las Vegas Summer League team, when he averaged 20.0 points and 5.0 rebounds a game.

Of course, Morrison was playing against guys much younger and less experienced than himself, but his performance shouldn't be ignored.

That's why the Blazers are giving him a shot to make the team, having extended Morrison an invitation to join their training camp. With Elliott Williams lost for the season after an Achille's injury, there's potentially a roster spot open for Morrison.

It's a no-guarantee invitation, meaning if Morrison doesn't make the team, the Blazers owe him nothing. If he does make it, he's got a one-year, minimum-salary contract. So it's not going to hurt the Blazers one bit to give him a chance.

After all, Morrison can still shoot, and depth at the wing is something Portland could use right now.

Morrison put in some time playing in Turkey and Serbia, then showed up big in the summer league as he tried to build a bridge back to the NBA.

The Blazers are in the midst of a rebuilding project of their own. This could be a nice match.
