Blackhawks 6, Jets 3

The SportsXchange

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Two quick goals to start the third period powered the Chicago Blackhawks to a 6-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night at MTS Centre.

Right winger Marian Hossa scored his 10th goal of the season to break a 3-3 tie at 3:11 and then right winger Ben Smith chipped in with his third of the year just over two minutes later for Chicago.

Patrick Sharp added his eighth goal of the year into an empty net.

The Blackhawks (15-4-4) have defeated the Jets (10-11-3) all three times the clubs have met this season.

Chicago led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 early in the second, but the Jets stormed back to make it 3-3 through 40 minutes.

Patrick Kane fired his 12th goal for the Blackhawks, while Jonathan Toews got his 11th and Brandon Saad scored his fifth. Toews also added three assists for a four-point night in his home town.

Jets captain Andrew Ladd and blue-liner Dustin Byfuglien both scored their sixth goals of the season, and defenseman Keaton Ellerby scored his first. Winnipeg center and leading scorer Bryan Little added two assists.

The game was the second of seven straight on the road for the Blackhawks. The late November endurance test continues Saturday in Vancouver against the Canucks.

The Jets host the Minnesota Wild on Saturday afternoon before playing the next six on the road.

Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford made 22 saves and Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec had 26.

Jets left winger Evander Kane was in the box serving a tripping penalty when the other Kane made him pay late in the first period. The Chicago forward's seeing-eye shot from the point beat a screened Pavelec at 17:26 to put the Blackhawks on the board.

The visitors jumped ahead 2-0 just 3:03 into the second period with the clubs playing four-on-four when Saad beat Pavelec clean with a wrist shot from the low slot.

That's when Winnipeg's alarm clock finally buzzed.

Just 19 seconds after falling behind by two goals, Ladd's hard snap shot eluded Crawford. Only 29 seconds later, Ellerby's blast from the blue line hit the back of the net.

But Ellerby would wear the goat horns about eight minutes late when Toews scored a beauty on another four-on-four. The Chicago captain snuck out from the corner, weaved his way around the lanky defenseman and then deftly flicked the puck over Pavelec's shoulder.

Byfuglien pulled the Jets even again, batting in a rebound at 13:30 with Winnipeg pressing on a two-man advantage. The Minnesota native went the first 18 games of the year without a goal but has six in the last six games.

The reigning Stanley Cup champions completely dominated the early shifts of the third period, leading to goals by Hossa and Smith.

Evander Kane had two good scoring chances in the final period but couldn't beat Crawford. The Jets' second-line forward hasn't lit the lamp in 10 games.

Winnipeg hockey fans had to leave their helmets at home Thursday night. A radio DJ's stunt to convince patrons to bring their buckets was stopped by the hockey club Wednesday. The campaign was to mimic the Blackhawks fan who, earlier this month, grabbed the helmet off Jets D Adam Pardy in Chicago and wore it. Pardy also had a beer poured over his head during the bizarre incident when a big collision knocked out a glass partition.
