BJ Penn to Headline First UFC Event of 2017

Former two-division UFC champion B.J. Penn‘s return from retirement will take place on March 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, according to the Hawaiian.

“The Prodigy” told UFC Tonight that, “I guarantee that I will be back in action on March 5.”

Penn (16-10-2) announced that he was retiring from mixed martial arts after his third loss to Frankie Edgar at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale in July 2014. The 37-year-old recently joined the Jackson Wink MMA Academy and plans to make a run at the UFC 145-pound title currently held by Conor McGregor.

Upon announcing his return early this year, Penn called out number 15-ranked Nik Lentz, but it doesn't appear that he'll be facing him on March 5. According to UFC Tonight sources, a Penn vs. Dennis Siver bout is in the works.

Siver (22-11, 1 NC) has been defeated in his last two outings. The match-up doesn't throw Penn in the deep end of the featherweight division, but it gives Siver the opportunity to bolster his resume with a win over a legendary name.
