Bills QB Manuel returns to practice

Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel returned to practice Sunday, two weeks after having minor knee surgery, and coach Doug Marrone said a decision on the team's starting quarterback for the opener will be made on Wednesday.

Marrone said Manuel, a first-round pick in this year's draft, is expected to participate in all aspects of practice on Monday.

"He's transitioning in," Marrone said, according to ESPN.com. "If we can have him practicing on Wednesday, and we feel that he is good enough and mentally ready to play, then he's going to play."

Last week, Marrone said undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel would start next Sunday's opener against the New England Patriots if Manuel cannot play.

It appeared the Bills would have to go with Tuel, but Marrone said Manuel's recovery is ahead of schedule.

"He looked good," Marrone said. "But I say that not knowing what can happen in the next couple days.

"Wednesday we'll make a decision. It's either going to be EJ or it's going to be Jeff. Both guys will be available for the game."
