Big 12 admonishes Tuberville

The SportsXchange

Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville got slapped by the Big 12 office Monday, two days after he ripped the headset off a graduate assistant during a game against Kansas.

Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby issued a formal reprimand to Tuberville over the head coach's actions involving Kevin Oliver.

Tuberville issued an apology while again maintaining that he didn't slap or hit Oliver.

"It's unfortunate that that happened," Tuberville said. "I've got to hold myself to a higher regard ... and usually do."

The incident occurred after Texas Tech's offense was penalized for an illegal-formation penalty early in the third quarter. Fox television cameras showed Tuberville screaming at Oliver and pulling Oliver's headset to the ground.

Tuberville said Saturday he was merely trying to keep his assistant off the field.

"He was on the field, and I reached to grab him and pull him off," Tuberville said. "When I pulled, I missed his shirt and I grabbed his (headset) and his microphone ripped off his head. I was trying to get him off the field."

At the time of the incident, the Red Raiders led the Jayhawks 21-17. Texas Tech went on to win 41-34 in double overtime.
