DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Ricky Johnson scored 22 points and was one of five players in double figures for Bethune-Cookman as they opened their season with a 91-74 win over Trinity Baptist Saturday.
With the game tied midway through the first half, the Wildcats closed on a 23-14 run to take a 42-33 lead at halftime.
The Eagles climbed within 12 with less than ten minutes remaining, but Bethune-Cookman used a quick 7-0 run capped off by an Allan Dempster dunk to put the game further out of reach.
Maurice Taylor had 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting and hit all six of his free throws. Dempster contributed 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Two other Wildcats finished in double figures as Clemmye Owens and Mikel Trapp each had 12 points.
Trinity Baptist, which is a Division-II member of the NCCAA, was led by Charles Cooks, who scored a game-high 24 points.
