Paolo Cannavaro has stressed the importance of his side picking up all three points against bottom-of-the-table Genoa on Sunday, but also felt it was vital for his team to keep a clean sheet ahead of a crunch clash with AC Milan.
Napoli won 2-0 at the San Paolo thanks to goals from Goran Pandev and Blerim Dzemaili, but Cannavaro focused on his side's defensive display.
“Beyond the victory, which allows us to extend our lead over Milan, today it was also important not to concede a goal,” he told Mediaset Premium. “Many forget that we are the best defense in the league, so congratulations to us.”
Napoli has conceded the second-fewest goals in the league this season, while posting the second-best goal differential, trailing only Juventus.
The defense will be put to the test in less than a week when Napoli travels to San Siro to take on Milan in a battle for second place, with the Rossoneri just four points back in the standings.
“Today it was important not to concede, and on Sunday comes a crucial match," Cannavaro said. “We have recently broken, but we found ourselves.”
