Are you planning a summer hiking trip to New York's Capital - Saratoga Region? If so, I'd like to make a few recommendations. There are five hiking destinations that I consider to be among the region's best. Here's a quick rundown on each one:
John Boyd Thacher State Park
John Boyd Thacher State Park is located in Albany County and features more than 10 miles of summer hiking trails. I'd recommend that hikers consider exploring the 5.7 mile long Cliff Edge Overlook Trail because of its outstanding scenery. The route also connects to the famed Indian Ladder Trail. Trail highlights include several waterfalls, sweeping views of the Hudson Valley, Hailes Cave, Tory Cave and the Paint Mines.
Peebles Island State Park
Peebles Island State Park is located in Saratoga County and features slightly over 2 miles of summer hiking trails. I'd suggest that hikers take the 1.8 mile long Perimeter Trail that encircles the island. It's an ideal path for casual hikers, photographers and nature lovers. In my opinion, the river views and the wildlife are the trail's best attributes. Fortunate hikers may catch a glimpse of a bald eagle or a great blue heron.
Moreau Lake State Park
Moreau Lake State Park is located in Saratoga County and features over 10 miles of summer hiking trails. Hikers should definitely consider exploring either the 1.35 mile long Red Oak Ridge Trail or the 5.66 mile long Western Ridge Trail. Park highlights include the Spier Falls Dam, Mud Pond, the remnants of Cottage Park and jaw-dropping views of the Hudson River.
Mine Kill State Park
Mine Kill State Park is located in Schoharie County and features 8 miles of summer hiking trails. I'd recommend that hikers consider trekking the 0.78 mile long Blue Trail because is meanders past Mine Kill Falls. The 3.55 mile long Long Path is also worth a hiker's time. It passes by the Mine Kill Falls area and the Mine Kill Creek. I should mention that the rocks around those areas can get slippery at times. Hence, hikers should watch their footing.
Grafton Lakes State Park
Grafton Lakes State Park is located in Rensselaer County and features more than 20 miles of summer hiking trails. Many of the trails are old carriage roads that are well suited for a leisurely hike. I'd recommend that seasoned hikers consider taking the Water Tower Trail, Long Pond Trail and the Shaver Pond Trail. The hiking trails tend to be rocky in spots. Therefore, I'd also suggest that hikers wear sturdy hiking boots.
