Benitez lauds 'fantastic' Lampard after breaking Chelsea all-time goalscoring record

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez heaped praise on Frank Lampard after the midfielder broke the club's all-time goal record with a match-winning double against Aston Villa.

The 34-year-old's equalizer on the hour mark and winner three minutes from time saw him score his 202nd and 203rd goals for the Blues in his 606th game, surpassing Bobby Tambling's record set in 1970. And Benitez lauded the midfielder's clinical record, before hinting he will play a part in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

"In the end to get three points in the circumstances was a massive achievement," Benitez told Sky Sports. "So I’m really pleased, it was the target and we are at least in the top four.

"I said before that hopefully [Lampard] can score two goals and then we don’t need to talk about the record so fantastic achievement, really pleased for him and for everyone especially because we won. But to score the number of goals that he has is amazing so hopefully he can score more in the next two games."

Both Ramires and Villa striker Christian Benteke where given their marching orders after receiving two yellow cards, and Gary Cahill was denied a goal when Yacob Sylla cleared on the goal line - although replays were unclear as to whether the ball cross the line or not.

Benitez refused to point the blame at the referee for Cahill's strike, but questioned whether Ramires should have been sent off.

"I haven’t seen the replay," Benitez added. "They told me that from another angle it was a goal, but you cannot blame the referee for this decision but it’s too quick and too many bodies around.

"Maybe it could change the game but we cannot complain about that because he couldn’t see it. We can talk about too many decisions but I think the sending off of Ramires wasn’t clear for me. But we had two or three decisions, Benteke and Azpilicueta, that maybe was another colour of the card but in the end obviously 10 against 10 we had the quality on the pitch that made the difference."
