Bengals CB Jones charged with assault

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones was charged with assault stemming from an incident outside of a downtown Cincinnati bar in which he allegedly struck a woman in the face in self-defense.

Jones, who said he was at the bar after taking in a Reds game, announced via Twitter that he was arrested last week and had planned to turn himself in Monday.

"Just got arrested for protecting myself, I will not let this break me or change what I have work so hard for," he wrote.

His agent, Peter Schaffer, said that Jones was approached by two intoxicated women at a bar and wanted to take a picture with him. After he declined -- Shaffer said that as a married man he didn't want a picture of him with two women to make the social meda rounds -- one of the women allegedly threw a beer bottle at him. He then reportedly turned around, slapped her in the face and said, "What are you doing? Stop it," Schaffer told USA Today.

Jones, who was suspended in 2007 for off-field issues, has been arrested three times since Oct. 2010, but he was cleared of all wrongdoing other than a $250 fine for disorderly conduct outside of a nightclub on July 9, 2011. He has seven other arrests on his record since entering the NFL.

According to Schaffer, last week's incident should be quickly resolved. He said several witnesses support Jones' side of the incident and that police have only spoken to the two women involved.

"If it was anybody other than Adam Jones, they would have investigated it," Schaffer said. "If it was anybody other than Adam Jones, they wouldn't have arrested him."
