Bellator 90 Results: Newton Knocks Out 'King Mo' in First Round

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | Knockouts were abundant at Bellator 90 with every fight on the main card ending via KO.

Here are the results of the Bellator 90 fight card held on Feb. 21, at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City, Utah:

Shahbulat Shamhalaev def. Rad Martinez (featherweight final)

Shamhalaev controlled the first few minutes of their encounter, dominating the striking exchanges. He even sent Martinez to the canvas with a right hand, but Rad popped back up to his feet. Martinez took control during the final minutes of the first round, scoring a takedown, staying glued to the Russian for the remainder of the round.

Shamhalaev went back to dominating the striking exchanges in the second round, hurting Martinez with a high kick that barely grazed the latter. He jumped all over Martinez and softened him up with a series of knees and uppercuts before ending the fight with a vicious right cross.

Emanuel Newton def. Muhammed Lawal (light-heavyweight semifinal)

Lawal got off to a decent start at Bellator 90, but he seemed a bit too reliant on his head movement, repeatedly dropping his hands after throwing combinations. Newton noticed the trend and tried to catch him off guard with a few high kicks, but Lawal was able to move out of the way. Newton remained persistent, and he eventually made "King Mo" pay for repeatedly dropping his hands, knocking him out cold with a spinning-back fist. Newton tried to sink a rear-naked choke on Lawal's motionless body, but referee Rob Hinds quickly pulled him off and stopped the contest.

Douglas Lima def. Bryan Baker (welterweight semifinal)

Both men seemed a little tentative during the opening round of their Bellator 90 encounter. But Lima quickly found his groove, landing a big right hand that sent Baker to the canvas. He followed up with another right, prompting referee Jason Herzog to jump in and stop the fight at the 2:34 mark.

Lima will now face Ben Saunders in the final round of the Bellator season eight welterweight tournament.

Mikhail Zayats def. Jacob Noe (light-heavyweight semifinal)

Zayats dominated their Bellator 90 encounter, sending Noe to the canvas early in their encounter with a counter right cross. He kept Jacob grounded for the remainder of the bout, working in some ground-n-pound before bringing the contest to an end with an armbar at the 3:38 mark of the first round.

Undercard:

Travis Marx def. Chase Beebe (unanimous decision)

Jesse Juarez def. Jordan Smith (split decision)
