Beckham may buy MLS team
David Beckham's retirement plans could include owning an MLS team.
Beckham, who announced his retirement on Thursday, may return to the U.S. to buy an expansion team or take over a team moving to a new location, according to Fox Sports.
Beckham's contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy included an option for him to buy an expansion team, and his advisers have reportedly been in talks with the MLS about locations for a new team.
"There have been discussions with his advisors, his management, preliminary discussions," said Dan Courtemanche, league executive vice-president of communications. (Miami) is one of the many markets that have been mentioned, so have other markets."
The league is looking to add a 20th team in New York. However, Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour is likely to buy it.
Also, Beckham's option to buy a team reportedly does not include New York.
Beckham first acknowledged in 2009 that he would possibly own an MLS franchise.
"It will happen eventually," he said.
In 2012, he said: "I have the option of owning a franchise, and that excites me."
Courtemanche said that Beckham will act on his option "at some point" when the right situation presents itself to Beckham and the league.
