Bears TE Davis failing to earn more trust as receiver

The Bears re-signed TE Kellen Davis to a two-year deal in March and Davis said he expected to be much more involved as a receiver in the team’s new offense. In fact, Davis said in June that he would like to have at least 40-60 catches.

Offensive coordinator Mike Tice said last month that the team liked the direction Davis was moving in coming off three multicatch games in a row before a Week Five bye.

However, Davis’ production has dropped off since the bye (he has only three catches in the past four games) and he’s on pace for 20 catches, 267 yards and four touchdowns — that would put him close to even with last season’s production, when he functioned almost exclusively as a blocker in Mike Martz’s scheme.

Davis had a night to forget in Chicago’s Week 10 loss to the Texans. He fumbled the ball away after making his only reception of the game and also failed to make a would-be first-down catch late in the fourth quarter on a third-down play where QB Jason Campbell's pass was just a bit high but hit Davis in both hands. Fans booed Davis off the field.

His failure to break through thus far this season has not been a surprise to league evaluators.

“(Davis) doesn’t produce," an evaluator told PFW. " … You don’t see him demand double coverage.”

Bears quarterbacks have targeted Davis with 26 passes this season, but he has made only 11 catches. He caught 18 passes on 35 targets in 2011.
