The Bears placed the franchise tag on DT Henry Melton, the team announced Friday.
If he signs the tender, Melton will make $8.45 million in 2013.
"Henry has been a good player for us and we are using the franchise tag so his development continues as a Bear," said GM Phil Emery on the team’s website. "We will continue our conversations with Henry and work toward a multi-year agreement."
Melton went to the Pro Bowl in 2012 after recording 33 tackles, six sacks, five tackles for loss and 24 quarterback pressures. In 2011, Melton had seven sacks.
Last year, the Bears used the franchise tag on RB Matt Forte before signing the running back to a long-term deal. The Bears had until Monday to use the tag.
