Following the Chicago Bears' 34-18 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4, I was somewhat concerned about their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 7. Although the Jaguars were only 1-3 coming into this match-up, sometimes it can be easy to overlook an inferior opponent. In the first half, the Jaguars held their own against the Bears as the teams struggled to a 3-3 tie. However, in the second half, the Bears came out with a sense of urgency, outscoring Jacksonville 38-0, en route to a 41-3 victory. Here are my thoughts on how the Bears played on both sides of the football.
Offense - B+:
For the second consecutive week, the offensive line played well, allowing just one sack. As a result, the Bears posted significant numbers in multiple categories. Jay Cutler shook off an early interception to throw for 292 yards to go along with two touchdowns. Matt Forte ran for 107 yards on 22 carries and Armando Allen rushed for 59 yards on five carries, including a touchdown that provided the final score of the game. Brandon Marshall also played a great game, hauling in 12 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown.
Defense - A:
After forcing five turnovers against the Cowboys in Week 4, the defense forced three turnovers against the Jaguars, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Not only has the defense recorded two touchdowns in the past two games, both defensive touchdowns were scored by Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman. The defense also recorded three sacks on the day as well.
The defense has been playing so well that they have scored five touchdowns in the past three games, while the offense has scored six. In addition to that, they held the Jaguars to 189 yards of total offense, including just 60 on the ground. While the offense has played better the last two weeks, the defense is a major reason as to why this team is 4-1 and tied for first place in the division.
