The Bears continued their flurry of activity late on the first day of free agency, adding depth at linebacker by agreeing to terms with Blake Costanzo.

Costanzo, who spent last season with the NFC West-champion 49ers, agreed to a two-year deal. He has been a standout on special teams, and that is likely where he'll make his mark with the Bears.

A 27-year-old, five-year veteran, Costanzo was credited with 12 special-teams tackles last season with San Francisco, which ranked second on the team. He was with the Browns from 2009-10 and began his career with the Bills, playing in Buffalo from 2007-08. In his five-year career, Costanzo has 71 special-teams tackles, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

He's appeared in 61 games but has never made a start.

The way we see it

After trading for WR Brandon Marshall, agreeing to terms with QB Jason Campbell on a one-year deal and re-signing CB Tim Jennings to a two-year deal earlier in the day, this was a low-key move for the Bears, but don't underestimate its importance. The Bears could lose their special-teams ace, CB Corey Graham, in free agency, and Costanzo, while a different type of player (Costanzo is not going to fly down the field as a gunner like Graham did), can help bolster the Bears in that important area of the game.
