Bears add Clausen to backup QB mix

The SportsXchange

The Chicago Bears signed quarterback Jimmy Clausen to a one-year contract and waived linebacker Lawrence Wilson.

Clausen spent last season on injured reserve with the Carolina Panthers after suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason finale. He joins a mix of players in Chicago competing for the backup role to Jay Cutler vacated by Josh McCown, who is slated to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' starter this season.

Jordan Palmer entered the offseason program as the No. 2 quarterback, while the team also spent a sixth-round pick on former San Jose State star David Fales and has Jerrod Johnson on the roster.

"Excited to start a new chapter with the @ChicagoBears !" Clausen tweeted Thursday. "Blessed to have this opportunity and looking forward to getting started!!"

Clausen, the former Notre Dame star, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Panthers. He has played in 13 career games, including 10 starts, all in the 2010 season, the year he was a second-round pick. Clausen has completed 157 of 299 passing attempts (52.5 percent) for 1,558 yards, three touchdowns and nine interceptions. He added 57 yards on 23 rushing attempts that season.

Wilson spent the 2013 preseason with the Bears and the last seven weeks of the regular season on Chicago's practice squad but did not appear in a regular season game. He has also spent time with Carolina (2011), Tennessee (2012) and New Orleans (2012), but has not appeared in a regular-season contest.
