OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) Amanda Beard's preparation for her bid to make a fifth U.S. Olympic team hit a rough patch Friday when she was disqualified from the 200-meter breaststroke final in the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational.
The 30-year-old Beard is using the meet as a warmup for the Olympic Trials that will be held in the same pool this month. She swam a strong race in the final, finishing more than 3 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, but was DQ'd because her elbows weren't underwater during the recovery portion of the stroke.
It was the same offense that got her disqualified from the Swimvitational preliminaries in 2008. Beard did not speak with reporters.
Beard's coach, Eric Hansen, said she would make minor adjustments to her stroke before the trials.
