Bayern best in Bundesliga history, says Heynckes

Jupp Heynckes believes no team in Bundesliga history has played soccer like his Bayern Munich side after watching it lift the Bundesliga following its 3-0 win against Augsburg on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Thomas Muller, Xherdan Shaqiri and Luiz Gustavo were enough to see the new German champion record a league-best 88 points this season, 22 clear of runner-up Borussia Dortmund. And Heynckes, who will be stepping down from his post this summer in lieu of Pep Guardiola's arrival, believes the swashbuckling nature of his side's achievements will go down in history.

"This is the joint work of the players and the coaching staff," the 68-year-old coach acknowledged to reporters after the match. "No team in the history of the Bundesliga played our type of soccer this year - that fills me with pride."

Sporting director Matthias Sammer was as quick to acknowledge the significance of the Bavarians' feats.

"The championship means a lot to me," he said. "The season is not over. We still have very big games ahead. And if we achieve great things, then everything is going well. We now have 88 points, and that gives a good feeling. I hope that statistic can last for an eternity."

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger wrapped up the celebrations, saying: "We have become champions with an incredible advantage in the table. That that has never happened in 50 years of the Bundesliga is incredible.

"This is my sixth championship, and I am as happy with it as my first. We all know we still have games left, but today we will celebrate long and hard."

The Champions League final against Dortmund and DFB-Pokal clincher with Stuttgart will provide Bayern with the opportunity to win a treble of honors.
