BASEBALL RECAP: Kent State 3, Kentucky 2By The Sports Xchange | The SportsXchange – Sun, Jun 3, 2012 10:30 PM EDT
GARY, Ind. - Kent State leadoff hitter Evan Campbell belted the first pitch he saw in the top of the eighth from Kentucky's Alex Phillips for a three-run home run to right field, helping the Golden Flashes claim their first regional title in program history. Kentucky answered with two runs and a flyout to the wall in the bottom of the eighth but went in order in the bottom of the ninth inning of the 3-2 loss. The thrilling finale was the sequel to Friday's 21-inning Kent State (44-17) victory over Kentucky, the second-longest postseason game in Division I history. Kent State has the nation's longest winning streak, 20 games, entering the Oregon NCAA Super Regional. Campbell, second on the team with a .340 batting average, tagged his seventh home run of the season in the eighth. It was the first and only home run at U.S. Steel Yard in six total games at the Gary Regional.
