Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Oct 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Detroit Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris revealed Monday that he is battling a form of thyroid cancer. The 22-year-old left-hander said through his Instagram account that he was diagnosed with a malignant growth during the baseball season and will soon undergo surgery. Norris said a doctor determined he could finish the season before undergoing the procedure. Norris was acquired from Toronto Blue as part of the midseason deal in which David Price was dealt to the Blue Jays. He went 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA this season for the Tigers and Blue Jays. - - - Matt Harvey is still scheduled to pitch Game Five of the National League Championship Series despite a bruised right triceps, and Harvey seems to be trying to erase the concerns of his manager. On Monday, manager Terry Collins said he was concerned about the swelling in Harvey's right triceps, which occurred when Harvey was hit by a ball off the bat of the Chicago Cubs' Dexter Fowler in Game One. Collins said Bartolo Colon or Jonathon Niese might start in place of Harvey in Thursday's Game 5. Later Monday, Harvey had a light throwing session in the outfield of Wrigley Field. When asked about his arm, Harvey told the New York Daily News, "It's good." He expressed no doubt that he would be ready to pitch Friday, if needed. - - - Left-hander Barry Zito, the 2002 American League Cy Young Award winner while with the Oakland Athletics, officially announced his retirement. Zito finished his career with a 165-143 record and 4.04 ERA in 2,576 2/3 innings over 15 seasons with the A's and San Francisco Giants. He was part of two World Series winners in San Francisco. He made three All-Star teams and went 6-3 with a 2.83 ERA over 10 postseason starts. Zito, 37, announced the news in a first-person article on The Players' Tribune website. - - - The Seattle Mariners claimed right-hander Cody Martin off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. To make room on the major league 40-man roster, Seattle released right-hander Logan Kensing. Martin, 26, who was acquired in a trade by Oakland from the Atlanta Braves on July 2, appeared in four games, including two starts with the A's, going 0-2 with a 14.00 ERA in nine innings.
