Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

June 25 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Mets signed free agent shortstop Jose Reyes to a minor league contract on Saturday. Reyes, who was recently let go by the Colorado Rockies, became a free agent at 1 p.m. ET. He started the season on the suspended list related to a domestic violence incident. Reyes will report to Class A Brooklyn and is expected to play Sunday. The Rockies are still on the hook for more than $39 million remaining on Reyes' contract minus the pro-rated league minimum of $507,500 for which the Mets are responsible. The Rockies placed Reyes on waivers after he returned from a 59-game suspension under Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Reyes was charged with physically assaulting his wife in a Hawaii hotel room last October. Reyes, 33, played with the Mets the first nine years of his career before signing a free agent deal with the Miami Marlins after the 2011 season. He had a batting line of .274/.310/.378 for the Toronto Blue Jays and Rockies last year. - - - The Cleveland Indians left Comerica Park on Friday night believing they had beaten the Detroit Tigers 7-4, and returned Saturday afternoon to learn they had won 7-5. The Tigers had scored a run, making it 7-4, and had runners on first and second with one out when Miguel Cabrera hit a long fly ball to right center off Indians closer Cody Allen. Center fielder Rajai Davis flagged the ball down but it squirted out of his glove and bounced off his left arm. Davis snatched it out of the air and held on as he ran into the scoreboard. Ian Kinsler, from second base, and Cameron Maybin, starting from first, had rounded their next bases and hesitated, unsure if a catch had been made or not. With Cabrera running behind them, both took off again. Kinsler retouched third before crossing the plate. Davis threw to cutoff man Jason Kipnis, who threw to catcher Chris Gimenez instead of to a base. The ball bounced but Gimenez scooped it up and finally followed the urging of his teammates and threw to Kipnis, covering first for a double play to end the game. Afterwards, the Elias Sports Bureau, official statisticians for Major League Baseball, informed MLB that Kinsler had scored because, as explained by a spokesman for the Tigers, the Indians failed to appeal on the play and Kinsler had crossed the plate before the final out was recorded. Thus Cabrera gets credited with a sacrifice fly (and RBI), Kinsler has a run added to his totals and right-hander Allen gets an unearned run added to his season's total. Both Detroit runs in the inning were unearned because Gimenez hit Andrew Romine in the back with his throw to first after dropping a third strike. Gimenez was charged with an error on the play. - - - Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader who was banned for gambling on the game, was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in a pregame ceremony. "I've already cried on the field one time," Rose said Saturday, referring to the time he got his record-setting hit. "That's enough." - - - The New York Yankees designated first baseman Ike Davis for assignment. New York needed to make room on the active roster for first baseman Mark Teixeira, who was coming off the 15-day disabled list. Davis was 3-for-14 in eight games and said he was not surprised to be designated while also adding he would consider joining Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre if he clears waivers. Teixeira started Saturday's game against the visiting Minnesota Twins. He was batting .180 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 167 at-bats this season. - - - (Editing by Mark Lamport-Stokes)
