May 7 (The Sports Xchange) - Saturday's game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals was delayed for 11 minutes before the top of the third inning when plate umpire Dana DeMuth had to leave the game. DeMuth was being evaluated for a head injury and was not expected to return to the game. Second base umpire Ed Hickox moved to cover the plate for the rest of the game, with Greg Gibson working at first and Mike Estabrook calling at third. DeMuth is the crew chief, having worked for more than 30 years in the majors with multiple postseason assignments, including the 2013 World Series. - - The Kansas City Royals placed third baseman Mike Moustakas on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left thumb. The move is backdated to Thursday as Moustakas has been out of the lineup since then. According to the Kansas City Star, Moustakas sustained the injury while making a tag at third base and aggravated it while batting. Moustakas has a batting line of .258/.314/.536 with seven homers and 13 RBIs this season. Christian Colon has filled in for Moustakas. The team also recalled infielder Cheslor Cuthbert from Triple-A Omaha to take Moustakas' spot on the 25-man roster. - - The Minnesota Twins made several roster moves for a second straight day. Right-hander Casey Fien was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers and left-hander Tommy Milone was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester after he cleared waivers. The Twins selected the contract of right-hander Brandon Kintzler and recalled left-hander Pat Dean from Rochester. Meanwhile, shortstop Eduardo Escobar (left groin strain) was placed on the 15-day disabled list and infielder Jorge Polanco was recalled from Rochester. Also, first baseman Joe Mauer didn't start Saturday night after his 28-game on-base streak ended Friday. - - The Cincinnati Reds optioned struggling right-hander J.J. Hoover to Triple-A Louisville. Hoover had a 14.34 ERA with six homers allowed in 10 2/3 innings. Right-hander Drew Hayes was recalled from Triple-A to fill Hoover's spot in the bullpen. The Reds also selected the contract of right-hander Steve Delabar from Triple-A, placed right-hander Jon Moscot on the 15-day disabled list and transferred catcher Devin Mesoraco to the 60-day DL.
